"TYRA'S GRAVEYARD"
YOUNG COUNTY, TEXAS
The following pages will contain a history of "Tyra's Graveyard" and short
biographies of the people who are buried there, if information could be found.
The original graveyard site was started by Jesse Vowell Tyra and his wife,
Martha Jane Higgins, in 1884 when their grandchild was buried there. According
to the instument of conveyance dates 30 September 1893, the land was conveyed to
the County Judge's office in Young County, Texas with the stipulation that it
always be known as "Tyra's Graveyard". Over the years, there have been those who
have taken it on themselves to change the name of the graveyard to Fish Creek
cemetery and the to Murray cemetery. At this time, there is a concentrated
effort under way to change the name back to what it is supposed to be, namely
"Tyra's Graveyard". Jesse Vowell Tyra was born 17 December 1836 in Walker
County, Alabama, the son of Jesse Vowell Tyra and Frances Gilham. He married
Martha Jane Higgins on 2 February 1857 in Mississippi. She was born 30 November

Tyra on 14 July 1891 in Young County. She was the daughter of Jesse V. Tyra and

The story is that William Porter became acquainted with the Tyra family when
they lived in Illinois during the Civil War. He became fond of Nancy Ann and
followed them to Young County to persuade her to marry him. When he arrived in
Texas, he found that Nancy had already married Jessee Cloud. It seems he was

Thomas Price enlisted in the Confederate Army in Missouri when the Civil War
started. After the war, he married Annetta Lisco and taught school for a few
years. Discovering that his lungs had been weakened, his physician advised him
to go West. He came to Dallas County, Texas with his wife and two small children
and in 1874 he homesteaded land in Young County, 20 miles west of Graham. He was
the first settler in what became Murray. The only evidence of a white man's
existence in that section was one log cabin in ruins.
J.J. Murray, for whom the community was named, arrived shortly after Thomas
Price and together they started the development of the country. The two families
were housed together while the men went west to hunt buffalo. They made the
first wagon tracks through the Double Fork Mountains in the fall of 1875. Later,
while ranching, Thomas Price taught the first school and gradually put land into
cultivation.
