History: Fort McKavett was established in central Texas in March 1852 in the aftermath of the Hidalgo Treaty and served as a protection of the frontier against the ever-present danger of marauding Indians. The remote army post, encompassing over 2,300 acres of land, afforded a measure of safety for adventurers embarking on the long journey to the California gold fields.
The fort variably hailed as the most beautiful and healthiest military establishment under the dominion of the United States flag, was named in honor of Captain Henry McKavett, who lost his wife in the Battle of Monterey during the War with Mexico. A number of notable military officers left footprints at Fort McKavett.
The post was first abandoned after seven years of existence, but of necessity it was reoccupied in April 1868. By the 1880's the McKavett settlement had a school, a church and several businesses. Fort McKavett remained an active outpost until June 1883 when the army abandoned the post for the last time. The site was destined to continue as a civilian community for many years. At the present time, a post office, a local business, and the Masonic Lodge are still intact.
Today, the Fort McKavett State Historical Site covers about 82 acres, and a number of the buildings have been restored to their original condition. The site is located about twenty-two miles southwest of Menard and about forty-two miles northwest of Junction at the intersection of Farm Roads 864 and 1674.
The post cemetery was established at the time of the founding of Fort McKavett, but apparently, a community graveyard was already on site. Soldiers, their families and area civilians were buried there during the heyday of the fort. At the present time, the cemetery continues to be in use and is an integral part of the community.
According to FORT McKAVETT, POST ON THE SAN SABA By Margaret Bierschwale, the remains of the military personnel and some family members who died at the fort were moved 23 November 1883 and re-interred in the San Antonio National Cemetery. Some reburials were completed in March 1884. In a biographical sketch of Thomas Gay Eason in Volume II, FAMILIES OF KIMBLE COUNTY, one of his descendents related Eason was hired to help move the soldiers' remains. It is interesting to note T.G. Eason was a Confederate veteran, having served in the Alabama Infantry.
At least two of the military deceased were not listed on the Fort McKavett inventory; however, a record of the reburials of Captain Thomas H. Fischer (Fisher) and Private James Howard is included in the roster at San Antonio National Cemetery.
The fort was evacuated on 30 June 1883, and to forego the necessity of maintaining a military cemetery on the frontier, the United States government opted to have the soldiers' remains removed to an established site. According to the Bierschwale book, a decision to move the deceased soldiers' graves was made 27 May 1879, and an official list of the graves was conducted that year. Actual relocation did not occur until four or five years later.
At least twenty-nine Buffalo soldiers died while in service at Fort McKavett. In an address on 11 November 1998 at San Antonio National Cemetery, General Lloyd W. "Fig" Newton remarked, "Buffalo soldiers served in Army infantry and cavalry units formed by Congress to protect settlers from outlaws, hostile Indians and other intruders, and were the first black Americans to serve in front-line, regular units. Galloping on horseback, eagles gleaming on their brass buttons, crossed sabers on their canteens and rifle in hand, these brave, iron-willed men were every bit American soldiers".
Graves of most of the civilians and at least one Buffalo soldier, Granderson Braddock, were not moved. According to Braddock's hand-hewn tombstone, he was born in Pulaski, Tennessee, died in 1875, at age 28 years. We were told by the late Frances Talbot Fish that the soldier allegedly went AWOL and died while incarcerated at the fort. Mrs. Fish whetted our curiosity about the history of the area, and we will always appreciate her fabulous knowledge of the legend and lore of Fort McKavett.
When an inventory of the cemetery was completed prior to the removal of the soldiers' remains, there were 37 unidentified graves.
We have now ascertained that twelve of that number included Samuel
Shellenberger (1812-1856); Loretta Caroline Temple Shellenberger
(1850-1874); Louis G. Shellenberger (1834-1878);
Their son, John Shellenberger (1869-1870, named for his grandfather,
John E. Temple of Junction City, Texas); Elizabeth Mary Rice-Shellenberger
McDougal (1815-1886); William McDougal (killed by Indians 6 August
1866); David Spear, County Judge of Palo Pinto County, Texas,
who died near here in 1874; Charles Miller, Steve Saunders, Henry
Clay, and a Miller child (killed in a shoot-out at Scabtown on
December 31,1877); John Martin, who was mortally wounded in an
Indian battle at Kickapoo Springs. He was brought to Fort McKavett
and died in the infirmary. (The graves of Samuel Shellenberger,
Elizabeth McDougal and William McDougal are now marked.)Elizabeth
Shellenberger (widow) and William McDougal married 1 October 1859
by Michael Sheehan, Pastor, St. Mary's Catholic Church in San
Antonio.
Assistant Surgeon S. Wylie Crawford, in a report of date 1853, stated five deaths occurred at the Fort in 1852 - one from scurvy, one from suicide, two from dysentery, and one from a pulmonary ailment. We have not found a listing of the soldiers who died at the Fort during the time period from 1852 to 1859. One of this number was Christian Weaver, a member of Company F, 8th Infantry. His group arrived at Camp McKavett on 14 March 1852, and Weaver died seventeen days later. It seems very probable the graves of the soldiers who died prior to the 1860's were not enumerated, and consequently. Were not moved.
An account was penned in 1877 by a Lt. Kirby stationed with the 10th Infantry at Fort McKavett during the previous year. One of his statements was, "There have been five persons shot and killed within less than three-quarters of a mile of the post since I arrived, and it is said to be rather quiet compared to what it was some years ago." Another report chronicled an episode in which four men and a little girl were killed in a shoot-out at Scabtown, a settlement just across the river from the Fort. A Texas Ranger, Tim McCarty, was wounded and died the next day. The incident reportedly occurred New Year's Eve, 1877.
Fort McKavett is located in Menard County, Texas; however, only the eastern edge of the cemetery is in that county. Most of the graveyard lies within the boundaries of Schleicher County. A large granite marker has been placed in the cemetery and reflects its establishment in 1849. In later years the land was given by the W.D. Stockton family. A deed of conveyance from Mrs. S.L. Stockton to W.R. Tomlinson, Ed Lehne, and L.L. Ball, trustees, was dated 13 October 1922 and recorded in Volume 21, Pages 76-77, of the Deed of Records of Schleicher County, Texas. Said property was described as being part of Survey #3293, Abstract #727, located by virtue of Certificate #184, issued to Thos. M. Kleinmetz. The metes and bounds with the proper references to the several "witness" trees, reveal "Beginning at the southwest corner of the old Government Cemetary (sp)."
The historic McKavett Cemetery is located in a pastoral setting about one-half mile northwest of the entrance into the Fort. It is in the near vicinity of the San Saba River on Schleicher County Road #245 (old road to Sonora). Not unlike a "druid of eld", a mammoth oak near the southwest corner of the historic spot has stood as a silent and gigantic sentinel throughout the ages.
The baptismal font in the St. James Episcopal Church was donated by the congregation in memory of the women and children who died while their husbands and fathers were serving at Fort McKavett.
My cataloging of the cemetery began in 1998, and I found several markers whose etchings had been completely obliterated by the passage of time. Some graves are marked only with flat field stones or small crosses with no etchings, etc. It is logical to assume that a number of graves are known only to God.
The grave of W. Wade Chapman, who died 17 February 1890, faces south. The story is told that he had traveled from Virginia in search of a healthier climate, as he suffered from tuberculosis. His sister lived near McKavett, and he settled there. Alas, his condition worsened, and he succumbed to the terminal illness. His remains were interred at the cemetery, with the head of the grave looking southward. This was to facilitate locating the site in the event his remains could be returned to Virginia, as he wished. The latter situation did not occur, and an appropriate gravestone marks the site.
Last, but certainly not least, I am indebted to my siblings, Fane L. Burt and Margaret Burt Gaver. Fane designed and generously donated the covers of this book and offered his words of brotherly advice. Margaret is my perpetual proofreader, and I am always appreciative of her help.

Last, Given, Birth, Death, Comments ## Civilians listed in cemetery inventory in 1883 |
San Antonio National
Cemetery
The following listing contains the names and other data pertaining to all known persons whose remains were transferred to the San Antonio National Cemetery. In the company of Fane L. Burt, Chevis Wyatt and Charlotte Wyatt, I visited the San Antonio site in 1998 and ascertained dates of death, correct spellings of names, and other information. Included in the list are Lot and Block numbers of the graves relocated in San Antonio.
To reach the San Antonio Cemetery, from IH-35 turn South onto North New Braunfels Avenue and drive 1.3 miles; turn right (West) onto East Commerce Street and drive 0.5 miles; turn right (North) onto Pine Street and drive 0.1 miles; turn right (East) on Paso Hondo Street; drive o.1 miles to 517 Paso Hondo, and the cemetery will be on the left.
There amid the hustle and bustle of the modern metropolis, the rows of unrelenting white headstones repose in the shadow of majestic oaks.
Michael "Buddy" Garza and Edwin Quiroz, Park Rangers at Fort McKavett, gave invaluable assistance with this compilation, and my appreciation is extended to them. A bit of my information on the present-day cemetery is from a previously abstracted list of burials, and I sincerely acknowledge this help. My thanks go to David LaRo, Jr. of San Antonio and others who have graciously provided information. I am grateful for the encouragement of Edith Murr Allen and Callan Graham, whose suggestions spurred the project of recording this bit of history.
