Chaffin Cemetery

McCulloch Co. Cemeteries of TX

Submitted by Louann Hall

The Chaffin Cemetery is located 20 miles northwest of Brady off Hwy. 283. To reach Chaffin Cemetery, turn left on FM Rd. 765 and go three miles to the intersection of Fm Rd. 765 and 2635.  Turn north on the dirt road and go 4 miles, then go east on the dirt road (County Rd. 326) for one mile. The cemetery is on the right side of the road. This is probably the oldest county-established-maintained cemetery in McCulloch County. It is located 1 mile from the Colorado River near the old Waldrip Bridge - a landmark in northwest McCulloch County. The town of Waldrip was about two miles southwest of the cemetery.  The Chaffin family settled, farmed, and ranched the land along the Colorado River. There was a river-crossing on their place and the Chaffin Crossing was a long-ago land mark.

During the early years, churches in the Lohn - Fife - Waldrip areas  baptized  their new members in the river at Chaffin Crossing. This was also a gathering  place for picnics and family outings. During later years, the Lohn
school  students used it for class parties and picnics.  This crossing was very prominent until the early 1960's. At this time, the land changed hands and the new landowner built a fence and put up a locked gate,  thus closing Chaffin Crossing after almost 100 years of public use. The old Chaffin home was near the present cemetery and is now only marked by  stones where the house once stood. The Chaffin family gave the land for the  cemetery, where Captain Joseph Chaffin, a captain in the Confederate Army, is buried. His grave is the only Chaffin grave still marked among many unmarked
graves. Many graves are marked with only worn sandstone markers. In 1959, people living in the Waldrip area orgainzed a Marion-Chaffin Cemetery Association to provide upkeep for the area's cemeteries.
