CAMP SAN SABA OAK TREE BURIALS

McCulloch Co. Cemeteries of TX

Submitted by Louann Hall

This big live oak tree is on private property in Camp San Saba near the old Ranger Camp. It is the largest oak in this part of the state, covering over 8,000 sq, feet of earth. The first recorded burial is that of Benjamin J. Smith, who was killed and scalped by Indians. Later, Marion Watts was buried here. There are, also, several soldiers buried here as well as the bones of three Indian braves who have gone to their happy hunting grounds.
