Bethel Cemetery

The Bethel Cemetery is located by driving north on Hwy 108 from Stephenville (toward Huckabay) and turning east on County Road 163.  About four miles up the road there is a sharp turn to the north and the cemetery is on County Road 471 (dead ends).  This one acre cemetery has no sign, but is fenced and maintained.  Mark & Cindy Shipman read this cemetery on June 27, 2001 and it had been newly mowed.  We compared our reading to the 1972 transcript (published in the 3 volume Erath County Cemetery Records) of Mrs. T.B. Cawyer and Weldon Hudson and changes in the cemetery are noted.  The oldest marked grave is from 1879 and the most recent one is from 1936.  There are many graves marked with fieldstones and the location of the marked graves suggest that many graves through the center of the cemetery may have been marked at one time.  Cindy Shipman is working to create a list of possible unmarked graves.
