A. W. ‘Doc’ Newman
ODESSA — A. W. “Doc” Newman went to be with our Lord on Monday,
May 10, 2004. He was born on Sept. 15, 1912, in Tama, Texas, to Emma and
D. H. Newman.
Mr. Newman resided in a nursing facility in Palestine, Texas, at the
time of his passing. Doc worked for Reliable Machine & Supply for
over three decades where he retired in 1975. Doc had a great love for
children of all ages. He was a member of the Optimist Club and a member
of the Permian Band and Orchestra Booster Club for 11 years.
After the death of his wife, he became very active in High Sky Childrens
Home where he became known as “the Cake Man.” Never a week went by
when he failed to bake a birthday cake or banana pudding decorated for
that special child.
Doc was loved by all those who knew him, friends and relatives alike. He
loved to tell a joke and was always anxious to help anyone who ever had
a need of any kind. He always had a smile and a friendly word for all
those he came in contact with. He will be sorely missed by all those who
knew him, but we rejoice that he is now in God’s hands.
Doc is survived by his daughter, Marie Hardin of Palestine, Texas; two
grandsons; five great-grandchildren; and several nephews and nieces.
Graveside services will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday, May 13, 2004, at
Sunset Memorial Gardens with his nephew Fred Neyland, formerly of
Odessa, officiating.
Services entrusted to Hubbard-Kelly Funeral Home.
