The Liberty Cemetery is located 10.5 miles southwest of Panhandle off US Highway 60 and FM 2373 on Carson County Road # 7.Northwest corner of Section 29, Blk M-4, according to the J. H. Gibson Survey in Carson County. This is across the road from the Liberty School. The cemetery was started in 1907 when J. C. Vance donated two acres for a cemetery after Frankie Vance, the youngest son of Mr. and Mrs. Frank Vance. was dragged to death by a horse at the age of 13. ("A Time to Purpose", Vol II page 282) On June 1, Frank Jr. had gone into Panhandle on horseback to run errands, When he didn't return, his grandmother climbed the windmill to look for him. She saw the horse grazing along the road. she found him about a mile and a half from home with a broken neck and leg. The Vances had moved to Carson County in January 1907. (Vol. IV, page 307)
Others from the Liberty Community are buried in the cemetery. There are approximately 41 graves, five of which are unmarked. The latest burial was of Robert Jordan Sr. 1954-2004.
Another burial in the cemetery was that of Augustus O. "Gus" Hendricks. He was born February 13 1886 and died February 15 1959. he never married, but he was a colorful individual. he had a practice of making high chairs and presenting them to young couples as wedding presents (Vol IV, page 7)
