The little girl, Mary E., could not say lady but would say da da. I had taught her to say "papa dada". Reader, if you have never had little children of your own, then you can't know what the next few lines mean.
After I had been gone about two or three hours, leaving my dear wife with those three sweet children, all in perfect health, then came the test. My brother came running up to me and said go home, Exa is dead---we called her Exa. My wife heard her in another room making a strange noise and going in where she was, saw her lying on her back strangling. She picked her up, turned her face down and slapped her on her back and a thimble fell out of her mouth, but she never came to. That threw a darkness over our home that never could be forgotten, but it melted my heart and made a different man of me."

Heresay...Died of pneumonia - complications set in after thrown from horse. Calvin (of Amarillo) told Suzahn that he was told by his father (Babe) that being thrown from a green horse broke R.W. Jr.'s neck. R.W. Jr. broke horses for the Calvary division of the Army.
Excerpt from "Riding Herd for the Lord" or THE LIFE STORY OF R.W. SMITH by Rev. Buren Sparks, D.D. (Pastor, First Baptist Church, Burnet, Texas ( only publication - 1942 - THE NAYLOR COMPANY - San Antonio)
Page 81: R.W.'s account of his son's death...second paragraph...
"Then the awful war came on and in 1917 my second son, R.W. Jr., volunteered and went to the army as a baker. He joined the army at Sioux City, Iowa, and was sent to Camp Logan, Colorado, and from there to Camp Grant. On June 10th, I received a message that my boy was seriously ill. I wired them that I would leave for Camp Grant, Illinois, at 4:15 a.m., and I arrived in camp on June 12, 1918. After seeing my boy and consulting with the doctor, I learned there was no hope for my boy, and you talk about misery----there I was with forty thousand men, all strangers but one, and he was at the point of death. Well, the seven days of waiting was the longest seven days I ever spent, but the end came at two o'clock on June 18, 1918. I came home, but because I had gone by way of Chicago and didn't want to come back that way, I came back by Kansas City. The corpse was shipped to Stanton, Texas, and the government paid all expenses. They also sent an escort with the corpse. Some folks are always complaining at our goverment, but I think it is the best in the world."

Suzahn's Obstetrician (Dr. Charles Stephens - Odessa) insisted that she have "Labroscopic" surgery after Jason & Justin's births were difficult & required C-Sections. The chances of another child would be "1" in "5000", but God had different plans. Calvin and Suzahn would have a "3rd" son following a car accident in 1980, on the "Dumpground Road" going to Crane. An oilfield truck ran off the road as it passed her, causing caliche to cover her Volkswagon Rabbit windsheild. Her car slid off the road onto the shoulder at a curve and rolled "3 1/2" times and landed out into the pasture. Suzahn was thrown from the car after the first roll jumped the barbed wire fence. The force caused enough damage to allow another pregnancy and 9 months of bedrest.
