Marinel Smith Howard

SHREVEPORT, LA - A graveside service for Marinel Smith Howard will be held at the Grand Cane Cemetery in Grand Cane, Louisiana on Friday, March 17th at 3:00 p.m. The family will receive friends at Rose-Neath Southside Funeral Home in Shreveport, Louisiana from 12:30 p.m. until 2:00 p.m. before the service.
Marinel Smith Howard, age 90, passed away on Sunday, March 12, 2006.
She was born to the late William and Nannie Smith in Grand Cane, Louisiana on September 16, 1915. Marinel graduated from Grand Cane High School and later attended Dodd College in Shreveport and graduated from Baylor University. After college, she worked at the Bank of Grand Cane that her father had founded. On November 7, 1945, Marinel married a young WWII veteran, Dwight Howard. Marinel was a devoted Baptist all of her life. She was a member of First Baptist Church of Hot Springs. In her early years, she was a member of Grand Cane Baptist Church until moving to Shreveport where Marinel was a member of Springs of Grace Baptist Church (formerly Sunset Acres Baptist Church) for forty years.
Mr. Howard was preceded in death by her parents and her beloved husband of 51 years, Dwight.
Marinel is survived by a son, Henry Howard and wife, Dianne of Flower Mound, Texas; daughter, Ann Hiers and husband, Mike of Hot Springs, Arkansas; and four grandchildren, David Howard of Dallas, Texas; Mark Howard and wife, Meghan of Frisco, Texas; Lee Hiers of Little Rock, Arkansas; and Emily Hiers of Boulder, Colorado; brothers, Hartwell, Henry, Alison, Cecil and Reginald Smith.
The family wishes to thank the doctors and staff at Hot Springs Internal Medicine and the staff of Crown Trace Retirement Center.
In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to Springs of Grace Baptist Church Youth Programs, Shreveport, La. or Grand Cane Baptist Church, Grand Cane, La.
