Gary Edmund Hunt

Mary Springfield Cemetery, Benson

MANSFIELD, LA - Funeral services for Mr. Gary E. Hunt, 76, of Mansfield, LA, will be held 12:00 noon, Saturday, November 29, 2008 at the Northwest Auditorium (Hwy, 171 South) in Mansfield, LA. Officiating will be Rev. Cardell Speed. Interment will follow in Mary Springfield Cemetery, Benson, LA.

Family hour will be held Friday, November 28, 2008 at Jenkins Funeral Home, 170 Van Buren St., Mansfield, LA.

Gary Edmund Hunt departed this life Thursday, November 20, 2008. He was born in Benson, Louisiana on November 14, 1932 to J B and Rosa Thomas Hunt. He joined the Mary Springfield Baptist Church at an early age and had recently been honored for 60 plus years of dedicated service.

He received his early education in the schools of DeSoto Parish, having graduated from DeSoto Parish Training School in Mansfield in 1951. He received his Bachelor of Arts and Master of Arts degrees from Southern University and Northwestern State University, respectively. He did additional study at North Texas State in Denton, Texas.

He worked at All Saints High School as an English and Social Studies teacher, and as baseball coach, which he dearly loved. He retired as principal of All Saints in 1994. After retirement, his special pastime was working with his cattle. He enjoyed spending time with his grandsons.

He served in the United States Army with a tour of duty in Germany. He was a member of the Retired Teachers' Association, NAACP, American Legion, Kiwanis International, DPTS Class of 1951, Southern University Alumni, the Board of Directors of DARC and many other community organizations. In his desire to help others, he did extensive unofficial paralegal work, research and community service.

He was married to Jean Bryant of Homer, LA and to this union two sons were born.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Jean; grandparents, John and Lucy Davis Hunt and Henry and Betty Williams Thomas; parents; brother, Harold G. Hunt, brother-in-law, Abram Valore, Jr. and numerous aunts, uncles and cousins.

His memories will be cherished by sons; Gregory Thomas Hunt of Chicago, Illinois and Jeffery Boyce Hunt and wife Evelyn Hicks Hunt of Coushatta, LA; grandsons, Trevor Bryant Hunt and Bryce Elijah Hunt both of Coushatta, LA; brother and sister-in-law, Leon W. and Addie Simon Hunt of Mansfield; and sister, Evelyn Hunt Valore of Shreveport, LA; sister-in-law, Doris Barr Hunt of Shreveport, LA; one aunt, Falicia Hunt Boutte of Houston, TX; nieces, Brenda and husband, Ronald Brooks of Houston, TX, Rhonda and husband, Robert Walter of Shreveport, LA, Dawanna Peterson of Houston, TX; Ashley Nicole Tillman of Houston, TX; Brittney Jaelyn Hunt of Houston, TX and numerous cousins, neighbors and friends.
