St. John The Baptist Catholic Church Cemetery
Wharton County, Cemeteries of Texas
Submitted by Lois Kennedy
Cemeteries of Texas Coordinator: Dolores I. Bishop
This cemetery is located at the St. John The Baptist Roman Catholic Church in Hungerford. In the center of the cemetery there is marker that read: Rev C.E. Byrne, Bishop; Rev. J. Kveton, Pastor 1928. The oldest marker is for Lydia Horecka who died on Mar 08 1916. There may be older graves that are not marked.
The cemetery was surveyed by Mrs. Lillie Petter and Lydia G. Matusek, both of Wharton, beginning on August 13 1985, and finishing Aug 19 1985. There were many names taken off a plot in the rectory. They will be identified by the word map and no marker in the remarks. This means that they were unmarked graves or there was no tombstone, or the person was still living.
On Sunday, July 24 1916 Holy Mass was offered for the first time in the Hungerford Community. The Celebrant was the Reverend Vaclav Damel who can be regarded as the founder of this Catholic parish. There being no designated church building, the services were held in a school named Nova Viden which later became known as New Vienna, located about three miles west of the town of Hungerford on what is now known as the Spanish Camp Road. This event can be considered the first milestone in the history of St. John’s in Hungerford, however, very significant steps in that direction had been started some two decades before.
On the feast of Corpus Christi in 1897, a group of Czech farmers stopped at the Hungerford station to do some prospecting for good farmland. They were John Bucek Sr, Frank and Charlie Bucek from Engle, Texas. Also Frank J. Chaloupka, Alois Matusek, Filip Chumchal and John Dusek from Sweet Home in Lavaca County. Having looked around the area for a few days, they decided to go no farther for they had fallen in love with this land and its possibilities. Soon several hundred acres of land had been secured by down payment, houses were built and families began arriving. The first few years were heart breaking and tough for the flat rich black land of this part of Wharton County was new to these men and required different methods of farming than ones to which they were accustomed. The great hurricane in September 1900, all but wiped out the improving results of these backbreaking efforts, but the courage and determination of these good people was not destroyed. It can be said that here was formed the nucleus of St. John’s in Hungerford. The turning point of the century, it seemed was bringing about a measure of success to this community and more families began finding locations; lured to this area by the rolling black land, which when worked properly could be the most productive in the state. The new settlers came from Nada, Garwood, Wallis, Weimer, Schulenburg, La Grange and many other places. Family names such as Macha, Krenek, Viktorin, Matusek, Chumchal, Mican, Okuchlik, Preisler, Ondrias, Adamik, Slovak, Kucera, Engbrock, Duyka, Munizs, Mills, Borecky, Hejl, Horecka, Strouhal, Koenig, Kalas, and many others became rooted deeply and their contributions to the welfare of this parish will long be remembered.
Having church services in the school or in private homes, depending on the condition of the roads was fine: but there were dreams ---- Dreams of a building with an Altar, Confessionals, Choir loft with an organ, a steeple with a bell, and perhaps stained glass windows.
A number of men organized a committee to plan the construction of a parish church. Mr. Dvoracek, Mr. Kalas, J. Schattel, Frank Macha, Alois Matusek, Sr., Frank Viktorin. Also Bill and Emil Horecka were the people attending the first meeting of this building group. Their efforts with the voluntary assistance to the contractor by several local skilled carpenters, such as were the Matusek brothers. John Dvoracek, George Ondrias and mil Horecka turned this dream into reality. On October 23, 1919, the most Reverend Bishop C.E. Byrne D.D., Galveston dedicated the new church in the honor of St. John The Baptist. Records show that the Charter members of St. John’s in Hungerford were the following: P.P. Krenek, Frank Macha, Sr., Frank Viktorin, John Dvoracek, Sr., Filip Chumchal, Anton Kocian, Emil Horecka, W.J. Horecka, Alois Matusek, Sr., Alois Matusek. Jr., Rudolf Matusek, Emil Macha, Joe Vrazel, George Ondrias, Mrs. Johana Horecak, and Mrs. Agnes Krenek.
The new parish became a mission of Rosenberg, whose pastor for a short time was Reverend E.J. Hajek. He was followed by Reverend Ignatuis Valenta, then by Reverend Jakub Kveton, who was assisted for a time by Reverend John Kalas, and immigrant missionary from Czechoslovakia. Reverend Joe Valenta helped on weekends for about six months.
During the administration of these priests many improvements came into being. This was made possible through the generosity of the members of the parish.
Important among a great many others were the following donations: Land for the cemetery -Barbara Bucek, First Main Altar – Mr. And Mrs. Matej Hejl. $1000.00 cash willed to church by Stella Hejl Kuban, Baptismal Fountain – Mrs. Anna Keprta, Pulpit – Mrs. Petrolina Adamik, Communion Railing, Everlasting light stand and many linens – Mr. And Mrs. Frank Macha, Sr., Mrs. Johanna Korecka provided room and board to The Reverend Ignatius Valentz during his tenure of duties at St. John’s. His successor, Father Kveton, became in 1932, the last priest to serve Hungerford from the Rosenberg Pastorship.
On the second Monday of July 1928, Father Duda assembled the Catholics of Wharton in the City Court House to begin planning on what was to become the Holy Family Church. On May 25, 1930, the new church was dedicated by The Most Reverend C.E. Byrne D.D., Bishop of Galveston.
Shortly after Easter in 1931, a dwelling was erected for the Priest and on June 6, 1932; Holy Family of Wharton was elevated to an independent parish with St. John’s of Hungerford as its mission. This change was the beginning of a slow and painful transition for most of the senior parishioners.
In 1935 Reverend V.A. Svrcek succeeded Father George Duda as pastor of Holy Family of Wharton and St John’s of Hungerford. He also became the last Czech speaking priest to administer to this mission. About forty percent of this congregation at that time could understand little or nothing of the English language. Hearing the Gospels read and listening to inspiring sermons in their mother tongue had come to mean very much to them in the practice of their religion. The fact of deviation from this custom was hard to accept. There were whispers, sad faces, and there were tears. The priests who followed were fully aware of the confusion and disappointment that had entered the lives of some of the faithful and were very understanding. Czech speaking priests from neighboring parishes were frequently asked to come to St. John’s to hear confessions and to hold services with the sermon in their language. The Fathers who came most frequently to assist were: Reverend Monsignor Joseph Kunc of East Bernard and Reverend Monsignor Alois Nesvadba of Wallis. In time an adjustment to the change was made and once again the joy of soul comforting worship could be seem reflected in the faces of the young as well as the old.
