Richardson Cemetery is located on the Tyler/Hardin County line adjacent to the Turkey Creek Unit of the Big Thicket National Preserve. Take Highway 69/287 north out of Kountze, Texas and at Village Mills turn right on the Oilfield Loop Road (second sign), travel about five miles east on the Oil Field Loop and after crossing Turkey Creek, take the first left (Hoffman Road) the cemetery is about 2 miles on the right. This cemetery is named for the family who settled here in the late 1840s, coming from Jasper County, Texas; Andrew Jackson Richardson obtaining a pre-emption certificate to land in the area was the first known burial here. His brother Benjamin Franklin followed him in the early 1860s, settling nearby. Most of the people buried here are descendents of those two brothers and descendents of Joseph and Mary Hoffman who settled nearby around the turn of the century.
(Note: Mary S. Holland is listed as the daughter of J.H. and Sarah Holland. However, Mary is really Mary Savanna Spurlock, wife of John Henry Holland and daughter of Andrew Jackson Spurlock and his wife, Mary Trull. Mary Savanna was married to John Huey May 25, 1898 in Tyler County, Texas. (Ref: LDS Vital Records Index – North America CD no.6) Mary is buried on one side if John Huey and his other wife, Sarah buried on his other side. That would be common for a husband who had two wives and lost both due to early deaths. (Mary S. Holland)
