ESTES CEMETERY

Submitted by Margaret Bates April 2001
When James Estes and his family moved to the Mansfield-Webb area in the mid-1850s, little
did he know he would be burying his wife, Sarah. She died 16 Apr 1857 and was the
first to be buried in what is now known as Estes Cemetery. James Estes set aside one
acre of land as burial land for his
family. A few days after his wife died, his granddaughter, Mary A. Estes, died and
was buried 22 Apr 1857. Another granddaughter, Texana T. Estes, was buried 23 Aug
1861. James Estes was the next to be buried 23 Mar 1864, alongside his wife, Sarah.
Silas Estes, son of James and Sarah Estes, took the
responsiblity of caring for the cemetery and decided to make it available to friends and
neighbors in their hours of need. At this period of time, there were approximately a dozen
families within a five-mile range of the cemetery. They were all
welcomed to used the cemetery as a resting place for their loved ones. As of March 1996,
there were fifty known families with 151 known burials. Over the years, many headstones
have been stolen, leaving many unmarked grave sites.
The last interment was Bennie Baker, 20 Jan 1992. Burials in the cemetery are now limited
to direct descendants of the original families.
In August, 1990, a major restoration of the cemetery was begun by the descendants of those early pioneers, and the cemetery is now well-maintained and a place of beauty.
The cemetery is located approximately six miles east of Mansfield on the Arlington-Webb-Britton Road (County Rd. #2017). The earliest marked grave is of that of Mary A. Estes, (1855 - 1857).
