McRae Cemetery, San Augustine County, Texas

Surveyed and recorded April 14, 2006 by Bobby E. Britnell (bbritnell@centurytel.net) and sister, Sandra G. Britnell. The cemetery sits on a breezy wooded hill beside an old white wooden church, which has a Texas Historic plaque attached to the outside wall. The original cemetery, to the right of the church, is almost filled with graves and reserved plots; a new section has been laid out to the left of the church, but contained only two graves at this time.

 DIRECTIONS: From the junction of US96 and SR21 at San Augustine, go west on SR21 about 2.9 miles to CR220, a dirt road on the right. (There is a sign on the left side of the highway indicating to turn right for McRae and Redland cemeteries) Turn right on this dirt road and go about 6/10 mile; the road will make a sharp curve to the right. The church and cemetery are on the right, in the curve. The driveway gate into the cemetery is usually locked, but you can park in the driveway and walk through the pedestrian gate. Continuing on down the road a short distance past this cemetery will take  you to Redland Church and cemetery, which should be a rich source of African-American research.

Footnote: STRINGER: just above the grave of Herman Fletcher Stringer and next to the grave of Plato Elliott, Jr., is a tree stump and the remains of a concrete fixture of some sort. This is likely the grave of Columbus Stringer, b & d in 1906, inf. son of Abner H. and Permelia Jane Stringer. He would have been Herman Fletcher's uncle. The mother of Plato Elliott, Jr. was Otie May Bailey; she was probably related to Ivy Bailey Stringer, the mother of Herman Fletcher Stringer. The three infants are buried very close to each other. Plato Elliott's parents are buried in Macune Cemetery; the other Stringers named are buried in Attoyac Cemetery.
