MACEDONIA CEMETERY -- San Augustine County, TX.
Surveyed Saturday, March 4, 2006 by Bobby E. Britnell
and sister, Sandra G. Britnell.
(Our mother was a STRINGER; her grandfather,
John H. Stringer, is buried here; his father, Abner D. Stringer, who came by
wagon train from Georgia, is almost certainly buried here, but in one of the
unmarked or unidentifiable graves)
This is a very old cemetery located on a dirt road in the deep woods near
Broaddus, TX. There was probably once a Macedonia Baptist Church next to the
cemetery. There are many unmarked graves, and many with the remnants of wooden
or petrified wood markers; there are also several older concrete markers with
the engravings worn away and unreadable; on some of these, the last name
"BEARD" can be deciphered, but no first names. (except possibly the one
tentatively identified as "Texana") Hurricane Rita in September, 2005 uprooted
a lot of trees and did some damage. The downed trees have been cut up and
burned, leaving a lot of stumps and holes. Some stones may have been destroyed
as a result of the storm. (Bob Britnell)

DIRECTIONS: From San Augustine, go south
on US96 10 miles to SR103; go right (west) on 103 about 8.5 miles to SR147. Turn
left (south) on 147; go about 4.5 miles to CR319 (dirt road on the left); there
is a green "Macedonia Cemetery" highway dept. sign on the right side of the road
with an arrow pointing to the left down the dirt road. The cemetery is about 2
miles down the road, on the right. Park by the covered "pavilion"; an outhouse
is available.
From Broaddus: go north on SR147 about half a mile; look on the right for
CR248--go slow or you'll miss it; it's a small dirt road. Go about 1 mile to the
junction with CR355; turn right on CR355 and follow it around a sharp left
curve. The cemetery is less than a mile down the road on the left.
Since our first visit about 3 years ago, many of the markers have deteriorated
considerably, and will become unreadable in the near future. Hopefully, this
transcription will help preserve the information. We have included amplifying
information on individuals contained in our genealogical files.

My name is Georgia Clifton-Smith and I am the Secretary Treasurer of Macedonia Cemetery in Broaddus, Texas. My husband, Virgil Smith is the president of our cemetery association. My Mother-in-laws great grandfather donated the land for this cemetery. It is the second oldest cemetery in San Augustine County. There was not a church there as was assumed, it was started because of a stranger riding his horse by one day. The horse stepped into a hole and fell throwing the rider who was subsequently bitten by a snake. The man died on the spot and having no family and with Stephen Thompson's approval, was buried where he died. That is what started the cemetery. Georgia Clifton-Smith
To correct one thing, the land
that the gravesites is on was donated by Steven Thompson and was the original
cemetery. The land where the pavilion sits there WAS an old church. It was in
very bad shape and we were asked if we wanted to buy it. The cemetery
association cut timber and sold it to buy the additional acreage and fence the
cemetery. This was not a church & cemetery as such.
Macedonia Cemetery Association has a homecoming on the third Saturday of each
September. This years will be on September 19th. From 10 AM until 2 PM we have a
business meeting, fellowship and a covered dinner. Anyone interested is welcome.
We all bring a covered dish, so it is pot luck.
