The Moore Cemetery is located on the north
side of highway 79, in Rusk County, near the Cherokee-Rusk county line. I
understand that a roadside park and the Sardis Baptist Church are nearby.
Only three listings were noted for this cemetery, being:
Simpson Moore, born January 24, 1824; died August 12, 1883.
Lavina Moore, born 1838; died 1873.
W. R. Moore, born June 26, 1859; died August 27, 1872.
The above mentioned Lavina Moore is the daughter of Elizabeth Walters and
William Taylor. She is one of two children born to Elizabeth and William
Taylor, her brother being William Jasper Taylor.
I want to make a trip to the Moore Cemetery in an effort to verify the dates
on Lavina's grave marker. Elizabeth Walters Taylor came to Texas in December
of 1835, along with a large group of "Walters" from Attala County,
Mississippi. William Jasper Taylor had been born in Mississippi; and,
Elizabeth was pregnant with Lavina when she arrived in Texas. Lavina was
soon born in Texas in 1836.
I have spent much time searching for the parents of Elizabeth Walters, as
well as her descendants. I have finally pieced the puzzle together, although
additional documentation is needed for proof-positive.
William Jasper Taylor, brother to Lavina Taylor Moore, married Louisa J.
Moore in Rusk County, Texas on October 7, 1865.
