Mays Cemetery is located on a dirt road near New Salem. It was recorded in October of
1963, accompanied by Miss Alma Mays, who furnished information. T.L. Mays (father of Miss
Alma) donated two acres for this cemetery. The first two graves were of Negro slaves. The
Negro graves were unmarked and located where Rufus Swink's grave is now. On the back of
the Mays marker is the following history of the family:
"Tom Mays was the son of John Mandeville Mays and Sarah Fulbright Mays, who came from
Madison County, Tennessee to Texas about 1850, and settled on the tract of land which this
cemetery is a part. His paternal grandparents, Benjamin Mays and Rachel Gay Mays, moved
from Iredell County, North Carolina to Tennessee about 1809. The Mays family came from
South Carolina to North Carolina earlier.
In 1885, he married Emma Jane Wiggins, daughter of Ransom Wiggins and Mary Ann Garrett
Wiggins. To this union were born three children: Livy, Alma, and Mabel. After the death of
wife and son, he married Emma McDaniel Woodall in 1901. Their only child was Thomas Milton
Mays."
This cemetery is unusually well kept, and also unusual in that every grave is permanently
marked, except those of the two slaves. Several confederate veterans buried here: Byrd
Mays, James Lowe, Rufus W. Summers, J.L. Pyles, and possibly others.
