Missing Names in Cemeteries
Rains Co. Cemeteries of TX
Submitted by Elaine Bay & Henrietta Welch
In 1995 I completed a three year labor of listing every name and the information found on tombstones in cemeteries in Rains County. During this task, I noticed that many graves were marked with only rocks or concrete blocks; many tombstones were broken or even missing. Consequently, the names of many people buried in Rains County cemeteries are missing from the book. As I began to read old issues of the Rains County LEADER, I began to check the names of those reported as having died against the 2 volume set of cemetery inscriptions. Listed below are names of people who do not have tombstones or were buried in unmarked graves. The names of the deceased come from obituaries or articles in old RainsCounty LEADER issues. Each issue of the only county newspaper was published on Friday each week; thus, the reader can possibly determine the date of an ancestor's death by the information given in the obituary. After each name will be listed the cemetery in which the obituary said the person was buried, the date of the newspaper from which the information was obtained, the date of death if given, and the age of the person if given.
