CARTHAGE - Funeral services for Jimmy Owen Powell, 71, of the Old Panola Community will be 3 p.m. Saturday, June 3, 2006, at Hawthorn Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Billy Shoffner and the Rev. Jack Wills officiating. Burial will follow at Panola Baptist Cemetery. Mr. Powell died May 31, 2006, at his home. He was born Dec. 24, 1934, in the Old Panola Community to Spurlin Ovid and Fern Butler Powell. He married Norma "Pat" Mayfield on March 19, 1954. He worked for the Texas State Highway Department, the City of Carthage, Carthage Independent School District and also raised broilers for Tyson Foods. He was a charter member, devoted deacon, teacher and song leader of Panola Baptist Church. Mr. Powell is survived by his wife, Norma "Pat" Powell of Old Panola; his children, Cynthia Denese Powell and Jeffrey Bryan Powell, both of Old Panola; three grandchildren and four grandchildren; his mother, Fern Powell of Carthage; one sister, Penny Almeida of Carthage: other relatives and friends. Pallbearers will be Jason Briery, Josh Hardie, Scotty Baker, Ben Wells, Jon Almeida, Greg Almeida, Jerry Pyle and Glen Holmes. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. tonight at the funeral home.
