Generation No. 10
10.3. Pulaski Floyd Gibbs, son of Elhanan Winchester Gibbs, Sr. and Frances “Fanny” “Polly” Williams, was born ca 1815 in Crawford Co., GA. Pulaski Floyd died intestate on May 19, 1881, in Panola Co., TX. His obituary from The Panola Watchman, Vol. 8, No. 49, dated May 25, 1881, Carthage, Panola Co., TX, reads: “P. Floyd Gibbs, an old and prominent citizen of this county, died rather suddenly on Thursday last the 19th inst., of bilious colic. A few years ago, he was a man of considerable means, a great portion of which he spent in the court house, prosecuting and defending suits, but he has been cited to appear his last time now, and like the many men of note who have gone before him to the spirit land, he will be forgotten, as it were, ere the green grass grows over his grave. He was 66 years old.”
Pulaski Floyd Gibbs is also found as P. Floyd Gibbs; Floyd Gibbs; and P. F. Gibbs.

The Gibbs Family had reached the Red River at Shreve’s Crossing (Shreveport) in 1832. Due to the unrest among Texas Indians and the trouble with Mexico, they decided to stay at Shreve’s Landing until it was safer to enter their new land of promise. They built a log cabin near what is now the intersection of Travis and Market Streets in Shreveport. Lucinda Clementine Gibbs, Pulaski Floyd’s sister, celebrated her 13th birthday in the log house on Red River on February 4, 1840. She had wild game in abundance and invited every person in the new village of Shreveport to have birthday dinner with her. There were fewer than 30 people in the village to accept the gracious invitation. Later, during the year of 1840, the Gibbses moved into Texas and settled south of Linus, early name for Deadwood.

Legend says that the property line for the LaGrones and Gibbses runs between the graves of Andrew Jackson “Jack” LaGrone and his wife, Lucinda Clementine Gibbs.

[TX, Memorials and Petitions, TX State Library, Archives Section, 100-402: Affidavit of Noah Smithwick in the Matter of the Claim for Land by the Heirs of Elhanan Gibbs, GoBox33G] The State of TX, County of Burnet, Personally appeared before me the undersigned Clerk in and for the County aforesaid, State of TX - Noah Smithwick a citizen of the aforesaid State and County and to me well known who upon oath says that he became acquainted with Elhanan Gibbs in TX some time in the summer of 1827, that he and Gibbs made selection of land on the Guadalupe in Dewitt’s Colony, that Gibbs stated to him that he brought a part of his family to TX, Viz, his son (Pulaski Floyd Gibbs) and a Negro girl and had left them at or near the mouth of the Brassas River in Austin’s Colony and that he intended going back for the remainder of his family. That he Smithwick afterwards learned that Gibbs dyed soon after his return from his exploring trip, at or near the mouth of the Brassos River leaving his son and Negro girl in charge of one David Milburn, that he Smithwick afterwards boarded at Milburns and frequently saw the girl which he was told by Milburn belonged to the Estate of said Gibbs, and furthermore that he considered Gibbs a citizen of this State at that time. In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand and the seal of said Court at office in Hamilton on this the 10th day of June AD 1956.

The obituary reads: “P.
