Selena made her first recording in 1983. In 1986 Selena won the "Female Vocalist Of The Year" award and the "Performer Of The Year" award, at the Tejano Music Awards. Selena and her band continued to make many albums in the next few years. On March 31, 1995, Selena went to a hotel to confront Yolanda Saldivar and recover financial records. Yolanda was an ex-employee of Selena Etc., as well as her Fan Club President, but she had stolen money from both the boutique and the fan club. When Selena showed up at the hotel, Yolanda shot and killed Selena.
