Roy Roddy
GLADEWATER - Funeral services for Roy Bill Roddy, 59, of Gladewater, are at 10 a.m. Friday at the First Baptist Church with Rev. Ellis Hayden and Rev. Aubrey Pate officiating. Graveside services are at 2 p.m. at the Mount Carmel Cemetery in Wolfe City with Rev. Welton Jones officiating.
He died Tuesday at Home Place in Tyler.
Born Feb. 12, 1939 in Wolfe City, he was the son of Robert E. Roddy and Bess Carter Roddy. He graduated from Wolfe City Independent School District and earned a Bachelor of Science degree in history and a Master of Education degree in administration from East Texas State University (now Texas A&M-Commerce).
He married Elaine Hagler on Aug. 5, 1961 in Wolfe City. They moved to Gladewater in 1964 after teaching three years in Booker. He taught seventh grade Texas history for 27 years and he retired in 1991.
Mr. Roddy was a member of the First Baptist Church and taught Sunday School and Sunday night services. He was a member of the East Texas Chapter, Sons of the American Revolution; the Sons of the Republic of Texas; Texas First Families and the Order of the Founders and Patriots of America.
Surviving are his wife of Gladewater; brother James Roddy of Greenville; sister Theda Harrell of Rockwall; one niece; six nephews and a number of great-nephews and nieces.
Pallbearers include Sherrell Walker, Paul King, Joe Thompson, Welton Jones, Harold Wells, J.O. Williams and Kenneth Casstevens. Honorary pallbearers are nephews Robert Gatlin, Wayne Gatlin, Jimmy Gatlin, Neil Roddy, Jimmy Roddy and Steve Harrell.

Visitation is from 7 to 8 p.m. today at Croley Funeral Home in Gladewater.
