Sulphur Bluff was settled in 1842 on a bluff overlooking the Sulphur River & relocated 3 miles south to its present position in 1850 in northeast Hopkins County. It is located approximately 18 miles northeast of Sulphur Springs, Texas, the county seat of Hopkins County. Go north on Church St. from the square & it becomes Highway 19. At the community of Birthwright, turn right (east) on FM 71.
The community of Sulphur Bluff is located at the intersection of FM 71 & FM 69. The cemetary is on the east side of town, along the north side of FM 71. It is actually across the street from the rear of the Methodist Church. Originally, the Methodist Protestant Church (Methodist Episcopal Protestant??) was located inside the present fence of the cemetary near the highway.
In addition to the present Methodist Church, there are a Baptist Church & an Assembly of God Church, which was relocated from "Stringtown", north of "The Bluff" up to FM 71 in the 1950's. Some of the family names in the Sulphur Bluff Cemetary are:
