General Information-Scotts Chapel Cemetery
The Scotts Chapel Cemetery is located on HCR 2234, about 4 miles south of FM 1304 in Hill County, Texas. This historic cemetery was started in the 1850’s in what was known as the Scotts Chapel community. The oldest tombstone in the cemetery is 1859, Fannie Griffin. Many unmarked graves are present in the cemetery and burials may have occurred earlier than 1859. The land for the cemetery was donated in 1852 by Mr. Burris Scott.
The Scotts Chapel Cemetery is a typical historical model manifesting an early European settlement in Central Texas. Two Methodist circuit rider preachers (Scott brothers) rode horses from Galveston port to the area of the current cemetery, purchased land, built a house, built a school house/church and donated the approximate 4 acres to the Scotts Chapel Cemetery.
Historically, one of the biggest ranches of the area in the mid-1800’s was the W.W.Treadwell ranch, about 6,000 acres. Mr. Treadwell had to eventually sell his ranch to cover a friend’s personal loan that he had guaranteed plus he never received money from cattle that he sold to a Northern contractor---he moved to West Texas to start again to build a new ranching operation. Many of the Treadwell ancestors are buried at the cemetery. Sam McFall, a Texas Ranger, that survived the Mier’s "black bean" massacre, and was a Texas Ranger on 3 different occasions, is buried at the cemetery. James William Scott, who fought at the siege of Bexar, is buried in the cemetery. Many veterans are buried at the cemetery. The number of unmarked graves at the approximate 4 acre cemetery is substantial. Beautiful large native oak trees and exceptional seasonal wildflowers augment the beauty of Scotts Chapel Cemetery.
The Handbook of Texas Online (HT) article for Scotts Chapel states:
SCOTTS CHAPEL, TEXAS. Scotts Chapel, two miles south of Farm Road 1304 and twelve miles southwest of Hillsboro in southwest Hill County, was named after J. B. Scott, who settled in the area with Mr. and Mrs. P. G. Scott in 1852, when the county was part of Navarro County. P. G. Scott donated land for a school and church, and his brother, Burris Scott, donated land for a cemetery. A few years later David Steele moved to the area and bought a farm for fifty cents an acre from the state of Texas. He later bought an adjoining farm for a dollar an acre. The log cabin that he lived in was still standing in 1989. In 1866 Mr. and Mrs. W. W. Treadwell, devout Methodists, provided financial support for Scotts Chapel Church, one of the oldest in the county. The Treadwell school, organized in 1920 in nearby Menlow, was presumably named after this family. Scotts Chapel had sixty-four students attending its school in 1905-06. A 1936 map shows the Scotts Chapel Cemetery and only a few dozen scattered dwellings in the area. A 1986 map shows only the cemetery remaining. James William Scott, who fought at the siege of Bexar,qv and Sam McFall, survivor of the Mier expedition,qv are reportedly buried there.
