HISTORY: Santa Monica Ranch was established by Margarito Hinojosa about 1900, on his share of his father Jose Lino Hinojosa‘s ranch, He named it Santa Monica because the first water well was completed May 4, the saint’s feast day.

Jose Lino Hinojosa (1836-1900) was a great grandson of Camargo settler Jose de Hinojosa, who had settled on Arroyo del Sauz in Starr County. In 1859 or 1860, Lino married Cruz Gonzalez; they had six children. In 1863, he served as a Quartermaster Sergeant in the 2d Texas Cavalry, having enlisted in the Union Army at Fort Brown.

In 1882, Lino Hinojosa purchased 4,000 acres in the San Ramon Grant in present northwest Hidalgo County. He also bought three public land surveys, of a square mile each in San Ramon Grant in 1885. Lino continued to live in Starr County, and his sons Margarito and Fabian operated the ranch in Hidalgo County. They built a stone house, one of the few existing in Hidalgo County, where the family took refuge during a 1915 bandit attack.

Margarito (1862-1943) built Santa Monica Ranch on his share of the San Ramon property. He married Liberata Longoria in 1906; they had twelve children. Margarito served as a deputy U.S. marshal in 1892; he deeded land for public roads, made donations to help build as church for the community, and donated an acre for the Santa Monica School.

Eight of his descendants operate the ranch today. His brother Fabian founded adjacent Cipres Ranch on his share.

Margarito Hinojosa established a family cemetery on the ranch about 1928.
