LOCATION: Southeast Alamo, at intersection of South Tower Road (Fifth Street) and Fannin Street.
HISTORY: In the 1920s, Alamo Land and Sugar Company, developers of Alamo, deeded lands for church use. Saint Joseph Catholic Church on Bowie Street was built in 1924, the year Alamo was incorporated. Development of the church was guided by pastors from Sacred Heart Catholic Church in McAllen until 1927, when St. Joseph was designated an independent parish, with Rev. James Smith, OMI, as its first resident pastor.
Patrick Ney, from Iowa, donated Block 90, then south of Alamo on Tower Road but now within the extended city limits of Alamo, as a Catholic cemetery on July 4, 1925. After burying his brother Phillip on the land, Patrick donated the land to St. Joseph Parish. He himself was buried in the cemetery he founded in 1942.
St. Joseph Church ceased operation about 1985. The cemetery is now owned by Resurrection Catholic Church of Alamo. Volunteers maintain the cemetery grounds. Burial records date from 1938.
