(at Post Oak Community south
of Fairfield)
Freestone County, Cemeteries of Texas
Submitted by Cathy Canterbury
NOTE - There are two Post Oak Cemeteries in
Freestone County.
by Paula Snider and Eric Bonner Wood
[NOTE - Update coming shortly]
Status: Active Background: John Mims from
Alabama bought land along Mims Creek here in 1855. Later
others joined. Mrs. Nancy M. Daviss deeded one and helf acres on July
4, 1879 for the church [Q2, vol 20, pg 468]. William Wesley Riley gave
an acre of his land for the cemetery after his arrival in 1878.
The church discontinued services in 1968 since most of the members
went to church in Fairfield. Across from the cemetery was
the school house which was established by the Commissioner's Court
on Sept 6, 1906 [vol 4, pg. 106] containing 18.5 square miles and
was annexed by Fairfield Independent School District on Mar 30,
1949.
Location: 3 miles south of Fairfield
Directions: Go south on FM Road 1580 3 miles to the Post Oak community.
The Post Oak church and cemetery.
Oldest Grave: Infant son of E. C. & J. A. Lindsey (abt 1880)
