Rehobeth/Old Terry Cemetery
Fannin County, Cemeteries of Texas
Transcribed by Debbie Evans for John W. "Dub" Duncan
Photos by Laura Lambert
Rehobeth Cemetery and Chapel and the Terry Cemetery both are located in Fannin County approximately 3 miles northeast of Wolfe City, Texas .
The Rehobeth Cemetery and Chapel is located on the east side of the creek and the Terry Cemetery (also known as Old Rehobeth), is 150 yards away--on the west side of the creek. There is a State Historical Marker in the Rehobeth Cemetery, which reads as follows; “Rehobeth” the cemetery chapel, first house of worship in this part of Fannin County; place for camp meeting, burials, and annual reunions since 1840. The chapel was built in 1850 and was destroyed by a tornado and rebuilt (or replaced) in 1888. Recorded Texas Historical Landmark, 1964. Note: another marker is missing or was stolen from the same stone where the historical marker is mounted. The chapel is octagon shaped. A story quoted by the early settlers was as follows. The chapel had eight sides, each with a window (or door), so while during meetings, church services, or funerals, an armed man was stationed at each window (or door) to watch for Indians, still in the area.

Many, of the early Wolfe City settlers, lived in this area and organized The Rehobeth Cemetery Association on June 16th, 1894. The officers were: R. J. Rambo, President, R. P. Benge, Vice-President and Rev. J. T. Gillespie, Secretary and Treasurer. The board of directors were; J. W. Rymer, Rev. J. C. Clement, T. J. Pyle, R. L. Kelley and G. Q. Armstrong. They met each year for three days (beginning on Friday prior to the first Sunday in May). Rev. J. W. Whatley was elected to preach the annual sermons. Rev. J. T. Gillespie alternated for the 1895 meeting. One unmarked grave is of a black male slave who requested to be buried by his master, Rev. Hampton Whatley as Rev. Whatley was dying. According to history the request was carried out. In addition to this grave there may be many other unmarked graves in this cemetery. One record reported 68 graves with bois d’ arc stobs (or other unreadable markers). Compilers note: I have researched the New Rehobeth Cemetery on the east side of the creek, but I have not researched and recorded the Terry Cemetery/ Old Rehobeth on the west side of the creek as May 02 2004
