Smith Cemetery

Smith cemetery was originally called
"Union Bower" cemetery, after the people who originally settled there.
Evidently, it was a group of Union soldiers or sympathizers who settled that
area shortly after the Civil War was over. Additionally, Peters Road is
just west of the cemetery. The Peters Colony was one of the first in the
Dallas area, settled early 1840's. If you are not familiar with this area, it is
only about l/2 to 1 mile off the West Fork of the Trinity River. Until the
levees were built, the area to the east would sustain substantial flooding, but
this portion is on a high bluff, so it was protected from flooding and is
probably why it was settled by so many different groups of people - near the
river, but not tied to its ebb and flow. Sharon Tucker
Unmarked graves in Smith Cemetery
They are marked by a rough concrete slab, appx. 4-5 ft. long
and about 10 inches wide. This is the grave of my great grandparents Thomas William
Hill and Mary Elizabeth (Mollie)Craig Hill. The concrete was placed by my great
uncles (2 sons of Thomas and Mollie) Rev. Robert Lee Hill and William David Hill in the
late 1950's. The story of Thomas and Mollie is a great love story, as he followed her from
Tennessee to Alabama to Arkansas to Texas. They were born in Pulaski, Giles Co.,
Tennessee - he 17 February 1872 and she 29 August 1875. They came to Texas 20
January 1893 and settled in Waxahachie,Ellis Co., Texas. They were married by
Rev.Vinzant on 14 February 1897. Eight children were born to them - all of whom
survived. Mollie died in a fire in her home in rural Irving on 28 October 1935 and
Thomas died of a stroke in Dallas 12 April 1956. Although their stone does not bear
their names, they were and are still greatly loved. I have burial
certificates from the funeral home and pictures of the interment of my great-grandfather.

This approximately 2 acre cemetery is located in a mostly industrial section of south Irving. From Grauwyler Road, turn south onto Maryland Drive, and west at Penn Street. The cemetery is at the dead end of Penn. It appears to be well cared for and still in use, but many of the graves are not marked or marked only with a concrete slab bearing the inscription "unknown".
