Submitted by Juli D. Quinteros de Hernandez

DIRECTIONS:  FROM DOWNTOWN DALLAS, TAKE I-35 SOUTH TO THE JEFFERSON EXIT.  GO WEST ON JEFFERSON THROUGH OLD DOWN TOWN OAK CLIFF.  CONTINUE WEST ON JEFFERSON TO HAMPTON RD.  THE CEMETERY SITS ON THE CORNER OF W. JEFFERSON & HAMPTON RD NEXT TO A RESIDENCE.   NEARBY LAND MARKS ARE SUNSET HIGH SCHOOL & CVS PHARMACY.

HISTORICAL MARKER:  JOHN MERRIFIELD (1792-1873) WAS PART OF A KY FAMILY WHO MIGRATED TO DALLAS COUNTY IN THE LATE 1840’S.  IN 1851, HE PURCHASED A FARM HERE WHICH INCLUDED THIS SITE.  IT WAS FIRST USED AS A CEMETERY IN THE LATE 1860’S. THE ONLY MARKED GRAVES ARE THOSE OF MERRIFIELD & SECOND WIFE, ELIZABETH (1802-1869).  THE UNMARKED GRAVESITES HERE ARE ESTIMATED TO NUMBER OVER 20.  AS THE BURIAL GROUND OF A PIONEER ERA FAMILY, THE MERRIFIELD CEMETERY PROVIDES A VITAL LINK TO THOSE WHO WERE AMONG THE FIRST TO OPEN THE DALLAS REGION TO SETTLEMENT.
