The Glass cemetery is located on CR 610 in the old Rock Quarry community of Collin County about 3 miles West of Farmersville near the East Bank of Lake Lavon (Sister Grove and Pilot Grove Creeks). The cemetery is on the right side (East) of the road at a curve. The family cemetery is about ¼ acre and has an old 4 foot wire fence and a gate near the road. Many of the old rock quarry sandstone markers have not with stood the weather elements and some have fallen over and are broken due to age and vandalism. These markers were made from stone quarried from the rock pit of R. A. Rike at Rock Quarry near the cemetery.
On December 24, 1854 there was a saloon brawl in Sugar Hill, about 2 miles north of Farmersville. The men wanted to be served at the saloon, but Dr. John Yeary, the owner, considered it a religious holiday and refused to serve liquor on Christmas eve. A fight began and Dr. Yeary was killed as were John H. Glass and Samuel Manson Glass, sons of Elisha William Glass. The Glass boys were by-standers at the saloon brawl. They are buried in a double grave on land purchased by their father in 1851. The large slab marker on the Glass sons grave is typical of the style of stone that came out of the rock quarry. Vandals have broken the large slab top of the Glass sons looking for treasurers.
All those buried are related by blood or marriage with one exception. Some say there are black people buried in one corner, but not proven. Warren Blackmon, a descendant of Thomas Benton Chapman and Nancy Truett "Nannie" Glass, maintains the cemetery. Elisha deeded his daughter, Nancy Truett Glass and son-in-law, Thomas Benton Chapman, a parcel of his land. The Glass Cemetery is located on part of this deeded property.
Elisha William Glass, his son Elijah Willis Glass and his wife, Martha Minerva Glass are my ancestors. Both Elisha William and Elijah Willis Glass served in the Civil War. Elisha William Glass was born 10 June 1796 in Columbus, GA. and died 16 May 1868 in Farmersville, Texas. (Mary Ann Fitzgerald)
This cemetery was established by Elisha Glass on his farm in 1854. First two graves were for his two sons, John H & Samuel M. They were killed in an altercation at Sugar Hill Texas on December 24, 1854. He gave the 90 acres on which this cemetery is located to his daughter, Nancy Truett on January 1, 1866. Nancy Truett and her husband, Thomas B. Chapman, deeded the small tract on which the cemetery is located to Elisha M. Glass on July 25, 1901 with the stipulation that it be used for burying ground for Glasses and Chapman and their relation. Deed reads Elisha M. Glass as trustee.
